Precautions for selecting LED flashlights

2023-08-11

LED is a new type of flashlight, which has been promoted since the introduction of white LED. However, initially, due to its low brightness and high cost, this type of product was in the "laboratory stage", and the expensive price was not dared by ordinary people. Some military products had a small amount of promotion. As the brightness of white LED increases and the cost decreases, it gradually enters the ranks of the public. The increase in brightness is mainly attributed to the emergence of ITO, which has almost doubled in brightness. However, in terms of price, due to improvements in production technology, it has decreased from the initial 4 yuan per piece to the current 40 cents per piece, and there are also many cheaper ones below 10 cents. The popular flashlights on the market now have 9 or 12 LEDs with a diameter of 5mm, connected in parallel and powered by 3 No. 7 batteries. Or 1 high-power LED of 1W, 3W, or 5W. The price of a single 1W high-power LED device ranges from 15 to 35, and the initially launched Lumileds 1W high-power LED seems to sell for 4-5 US dollars.

Semiconductor lighting is known as the fourth generation lighting source, which can be said to be an updated product. The cost is much higher than ordinary light bulbs and flashlights, but the lifespan is long. In terms of energy efficiency, I don't know how many regular light bulbs are. LED flashlights range from 1W to 5W per month. When it comes to energy-saving advantages, aside from flashlights, LED products currently marketed are between incandescent and fluorescent lamps in terms of energy consumption, and are expected to surpass fluorescent lamps in 2008. But it is absolutely environmentally friendly and pollution-free. Long lifespan is a recognized advantage of LED, but the LED used for flashlights in the market can be said to have a mixed bag of good and bad, which is too much to elaborate on.

Advantages of LED flashlights

The inherent characteristics of LED determine that it is the most ideal light source to replace traditional light sources, and it has a wide range of applications.

1、 Small size

LED is basically a very small chip encapsulated in epoxy resin, so it is very small and light.

2、 Low power consumption

LED power consumption is very low, generally speaking, the working voltage of LED is 2-3.6V. The working current is 0.02-0.03A. This means that it consumes no more than 0.1W of electricity.

3、 Long service life

Under appropriate current and voltage, the service life of LED can reach 100000 hours.

4、 High brightness, low heat

5、 Environmental protection

LED is made of non-toxic materials, unlike fluorescent lamps that contain mercury, which can cause pollution. At the same time, LED can also be recycled and reused.

6、 Durable and sturdy

LED is completely encapsulated in epoxy resin, which is stronger than light bulbs and fluorescent tubes. There is no loose part inside the lamp body, which makes the LED relatively undamaged.

Disadvantages of LED flashlights

Another fatal drawback of LED flashlights, which is difficult for ordinary people to detect from a technical perspective, is their low color rendering index! The color displayed under LED illumination is not as real as that of incandescent lamps, which needs to be analyzed from the perspective of spectral distribution and is a technical issue and will not be elaborated.

Another drawback is that the light spot, due to the manufacturing process defects of white LED itself and the matching error with the reflection cup or lens, can easily cause a "yellow circle" problem. Some manufacturers do not consider device quality and coordination issues, completely copying other manufacturers' products, flooding the market with low-quality LED flashlights, seriously damaging the reputation of LED. We deeply regret this. There are too many counterfeit and inferior products. Of course, a high-quality flashlight won't do.

By the way, I would like to remind consumers to pay attention to the following when purchasing flashlights:

1. Looking at batteries, there are two types: regular batteries and lithium batteries. Although lithium batteries are rechargeable, they have a low lifespan of about 2 years, while LED batteries have a lifespan of about 10 years. You can choose according to the actual situation.

2. It is difficult to distinguish the quality of a light bulb with the naked eye when it is turned off. The consistency of the light bulb can be observed when it is turned on.

3. Looking at the aperture, a good LED flashlight has a uniform circle, while a poor LED flashlight has uneven distribution of yellow and blue spots.

4. Look at the brightness, good LED flashlights have high brightness and slow attenuation speed.

5. Look at waterproofing. A good LED flashlight has waterproof function, good seismic performance, and is resistant to falling

6. Look at the appearance. Everyone knows better than me about this, but I won't say much more. I chose an aluminum alloy shell, which is beautiful and elegant.
